Wrestling with your toddler guide

Rough-and-tumble play · 10 minutes

Pillow fight

One pillow each, knees on the rug. Faces off-limits; stop means stop. You take more hits than you give.

Reach for this when

they're wound up after nap or asking to jump on the bed and you want a yes with boundaries.

What you need

  • Two pillows (bed pillows or throw pillows)
  • Soft surface — rug or carpet

How to play

  1. You: Kneel facing each other on the rug, one pillow each. Say once: "Pillows only. Faces off-limits. Stop means stop." They: Hold their pillow and wait for your first tap.
  2. You: Tap their pillow lightly — let them hit you back harder. They: Swing, laugh, and test how hard is still fun.
  3. You: When they lean in laughing, flop backward — "You got me!" — then get up for another round. They: Chase the next hit or climb on you while you're down.
  4. You: If they hit your face, pause: "Pillows only — try my shoulder." One redirect, then continue or stop. They: Adjust aim or say stop; you honor either.
  5. You: Call it after two flops or when giggles turn breathless. Pillows down, high-five, water if they want. They: Help put pillows back — ritual close.

If it flops

Too wild? Sit on the couch and pillow-fight from seated — less velocity, same silliness.
