Cardboard box playhouse guide

Box play · 15–20 minutes

Car road trip

Week two — hood cut, paper-plate wheels, steering wheel drawn inside. You call out stops; they drive and pay at the gas station.

Reach for this when

they're making vroom sounds and pushing chairs around the kitchen.

What you need

  • Car box (hood flap, four paper-plate wheels taped on)
  • Masking tape road on the floor
  • Small bowl of "gas" (dry beans or pom-poms)
  • Paper scrap as credit card

How to play

  1. You: Lay a masking-tape road from the box to the couch — one line, not a city map. They: Watch where the road goes.
  2. You: Hand them the steering wheel (drawn circle inside). "We're driving to the store. First stop: gas." They: Climb in and grip the wheel.
  3. You: Gas station: bowl of beans at the hood. They scoop three beans in — "Full tank." They: Pour beans; you make the gas-pump noise.
  4. You: Store stop: name one item they must "buy" (real snack from the pantry). Drive home on the tape road. They: Hand you the paper credit card; you ring up the snack.

If it flops

Only wants to honk? Tape a horn button (paper circle) and let honking be the whole trip — same box, fewer stops.
