Cardboard box playhouse guide

Box play · 15–20 minutes

House doorbell

Week one — door cut, window flap, and a doorbell (tape loop). You knock; they answer and host a tour.

Reach for this when

the box is fresh and they keep hiding inside it anyway — give the hiding a front door.

What you need

  • House box (door + window cut, flaps taped smooth)
  • Painter's tape doorbell square
  • Stuffed animal or doll as guest
  • Washable markers for mailbox numbers

How to play

  1. You: Tape a square of painter's tape beside the door — "That's the doorbell." Show one ding-dong knock pattern. They: Watch where the doorbell lives.
  2. You: Sit outside the box with a stuffed guest. Knock twice, pause, knock once. They: Open the door from inside.
  3. You: When they open the door, ask for a tour — "Where's the kitchen?" Let them invent rooms. They: Name rooms, lead you in, or give a one-word tour.
  4. You: Trade roles once: they knock, you answer with a silly voice. End when the guest has visited every "room." They: Knock; you bring the guest back out for closure.

If it flops

Won't open the door? Leave the guest on the step — "Bear is waiting for cookies" — and walk away. Curiosity usually wins in ninety seconds.
